Centre of Excellence chief investigator Professor David J Karoly has been appointed a Board member of the Federal Government’s Climate Change Authority. Professor Karoly is a world expert on climate variability and climate change. He is one of just seven new appointments announced yesterday by the Federal Minister for Climate Change Greg Combet. The Climate Change Authority will provide advice on the Australian Government's policies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute to climate change. The Authority has a Board of nine members with skills in science, economics, climate change mitigation, emissions trading, investment and business. Professor Karoly said he was honoured to join this important expert board, which will provide vital advice on Australia's policies for addressing the growing problem of climate change. “The best scientific assessments from Australia and overseas on climate change and greenhouse gas emissions will be used to inform the recommendations from the Authority, " he said. "This is a very strong board," Mr Combet said. "They will bring a diverse set of skills, experience and qualifications to bear in the key areas required under the legislation establishing the Authority – science, economics, business, investment, finance and public administration." "These appointments will ensure that the Climate Change Authority thoroughly tests the evidence, material and advice before it,’ he said.
