CoECSS undergraduate summer scholarships

The ARC Centre of Excellence Summer Scholarships in Climate System Science are highly competitive scholarship awards intended to provide undergraduate students from Australian universities an introduction to cutting-edge climate system research at the UNSW Climate Change Research Centre (CCRC).

Students should be in their second, third, or post-honours year and interested in pursuing a postgraduate degree in climate system science. Current CCRC honours or PhD students are not eligible for this scholarship.

Up to five scholarships are available for domestic students to conduct supervised research at the CCRC for an eight-week period during the summer break from November to February, with a break around the holidays. The scholarships are valued at $4,000 for the eight-week research project. To be eligible, applicants must be Australian/New Zealand citizens or Australian permanent residents.

Within the scholarship, students will conduct supervised research on one of the following projects

1. Exploring the sensitivity of simulated land-atmosphere carbon fluxes to initial conditions. [More information]
2. How will the Southern Ocean respond to Anthropogenic Forcing?  [More information]
3. The role of eddies in the hysteresis of the global wind driven ocean circulation. [More information].
4. Climate-carbon cycle interactions on centennial to millennial time scales. [More information].
5. Land surface modelling with the Community Atmosphere Biosphere Land Exchange (CABLE) model; model evaluation, land-atmosphere coupling, and the terrestrial carbon cycle. [More information].
6. Paleoclimatological impacts of ocean gateways from the Eocene to present. [More information].
7. Climatology of sounding data over Australia. [More information].
8. Micrometeorological modelling of the urban environment. [More information].
9. Studying the El Nino-Southern Oscillation in a hierarchy of numerical models. [More information].
10. Understanding large-scale ocean adjustment through westward propagation. [More information].
11. The Health Impacts of Climate Change. [More information].

• a cover letter explaining their interest in the scholarship program and a shortlist of the projects they are keen to work on,
• a current academic transcript, and
• a short CV with particular focus on their computational skills.
