Thesis Title

The Physical and Bio-Optical Structure of the Southern Ocean Eddies in Observations and Models

Biography

Ramkrushn commenced his PhD at UTAS in March, 2016. He is interested in the role of eddies in the Southern Ocean. In particular, how the eddy circulation impacts ocean productivity and exchange of carbon dioxide between the ocean and atmosphere. In order to accomplish this, he will exploit new and existing observations and CSIRO’s state-of-the-art global 1/10° eddy-resolving biogeochemical model.

Prior to his PhD, Ramkrushn acquired his Bachelor’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering from The Aeronautical Society of India (AeSI). His avid interest in fluid dynamics inspired him to pursue his Master’s in Earth System Science and Technology from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur, India) where he focused on the mechanisms responsible for intense winter cooling of the Arabian Sea. After his Masters, he joined IIT Kharagpur as a project assistant and worked on a project entitled Retrieving Salinity and Temperature Profiles from Satellite Data over the Bay of Bengal. In this project, he developed software to derive temperature and salinity profiles from the satellite derived sea surface temperature.
