Tim Cowan

Former PhD Student

Email: Tim.Cowan@csiro.au
Supervisors: Wenju Cai, Matthew England

Tim began his PhD with Matthew England at CSIRO/UNSW in February 2009 (part-time). He is investigating how anthropogenic aerosols impact the large-scale circulation of the ocean and atmosphere, particularly across the Asian monsoon regions, and the tropical-subtropical Indian Ocean. Tim has been working in the field of climate dynamics since 2005 at CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research (with Wenju Cai), after graduating from the University of Melbourne in 2003 with a B.Sc. (Honours), majoring in Earth Science and Chemistry. His research interest lies in understanding the large-scale modes of variability, Indo-Pacific climate variability and change, and regional extremes such as drought and heat waves, in observations and coupled climate models. Tim is currently working with the Southern Ocean team (CSIRO), focusing on evaluating model skill in simulating ocean temperature, stratification and circulation changes near Antarctica, and how their potential involvement in the acceleration of basal melt rates.
