Urban climate model development for Australian conditions
Mat has a background in architecture and physics, and is interested in how forms of urbanisation affect the local climate. His PhD is in model development; assessing and improving the performance of an urban climate model for Australian cities. His current work is focused on better representing the interaction between internal and external environments, allowing prediction of building heating and cooling energy use at the city scale.
A capable model will assist planners and legislators quantitatively assess climate impacts in urban areas, evaluate measures to reduce the urban heat island, and predict city scale electricity demand under different urban planning and climate scenarios.
